As siblings (out of eight) and proud children of Mexican immigrants, Alvaro Huerta, Ph.D., and Salomon Huerta, M.F.A., have overcome tremendous obstacles to succeed in this country. This includes surviving abject poverty as kids in the Colonia Libertad in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. This also includes experiencing/witnessing poverty, war-like violence (gangs & police)
ALVARO HUERTA and, overall, a state of hopelessness during their youth in the Ramona Gardens public housing project or Big Hazard projects in Boyle Heights (Los Angeles, Alta California). After attending mostly under-performing, inner-city public schools with extremely low expectations for brown kids from the projects, they graduated from the best colleges and universities in the world. For Dr. Alvaro Huerta, this includes UCLA (B.A., M.A.) and UC Berkeley (Ph.D.). For Mr. Salomon Huerta, this includes Art Center College of Design in Pasadena (B.F.A.) and UCLA (M.F.A.). While Dr. Alvaro Huerta-a CPP faculty member (URP/EWS) & scholar-activist-has published books/articles and received prestigious fellowships, such as a Ford Foundation Fellowship, among others, Mr. Salomon Huerta-a critically acclaimed artist-has exhibited in the best galleries and museums in the world, such as the Gagosian, Whitney Museum of American Art and LACMA.
